Typing Test (Hindi & English)

Practise for SSC CHSL, CGL and other skill tests: type a passage in English or Hindi — Remington (Kruti Dev) or Inscript — and get your WPM, accuracy, mistakes and an SSC-style score.

How to use it

  1. Choose the language, the test time (1, 2, 5, 10 or 15 minutes) and a passage. For Hindi, also pick Remington (Kruti Dev) or Inscript.
  2. Click the typing box and start typing the passage. The timer starts with your first key press.
  3. Watch the live speed and accuracy. Green words are correct, red ones are mistakes, and the passage scrolls as you go.
  4. When the time is up you get gross and net WPM, accuracy, key depressions per hour, error % and a list of every mistake.

How typing speed is measured

  • Key depressions — every key that ends up in your typed text, including spaces. In Hindi Remington typing, each Kruti Dev key counts.
  • Gross WPM = key depressions ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. Five key depressions are treated as one word.
  • Net WPM = gross WPM − mistakes ÷ minutes. Missed, extra or wrong words are full mistakes; a word that differs only in a capital letter or punctuation counts as half.
  • Accuracy = correct words ÷ all words judged × 100.
  • Key depressions per hour (KDPH) = key depressions × 60 ÷ minutes — the unit SSC uses for data entry tests.

For example, 2,000 key depressions in 10 minutes with 8 mistakes is a gross speed of 40 WPM, a net speed of 39.2 WPM and 12,000 KDPH.

Remington or Inscript for Hindi?

Remington follows the old Hindi typewriter. It is the layout of the Kruti Dev font, and Remington GAIL brings the same keys to Unicode fonts like Mangal. The short i matra (ि) is typed before the letter and the reph (र्) after it — so भारत is Hkkjr and कर्म is deZ. Inscript is the standard Indian layout: letters and matras are typed in the order you say them, and it is built into Windows and macOS. Practise the one your exam allows; you can switch any time in the settings above, and a key chart is shown under the typing box.

Tips to improve your speed

  • Keep your fingers on the home row (ASDF JKL;) and look at the screen, not the keyboard.
  • Aim for accuracy first. Speed comes with practice, but every mistake lowers your net speed.
  • Practise daily for 15–20 minutes rather than for hours once a week.
  • Do a few tests with Backspace off and with the same time as your exam.
  • Have a Kruti Dev passage from a coaching book? Turn it into Unicode with the Kruti Dev to Unicode converter and paste it under “Custom”. Count words in any passage with the word counter.

Frequently asked questions

How is typing speed calculated?

Speed is counted in key depressions (every key that ends up in your text, including spaces). Five key depressions make one word, so gross WPM = key depressions ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. Net WPM then subtracts your mistakes per minute, which is why accuracy matters as much as speed.

What is the difference between gross and net speed?

Gross speed counts everything you typed. Net speed takes off a penalty for each mistake, so it shows how fast you type correctly. Exams look at the correct text, so net speed and accuracy are what to improve.

Which Hindi keyboard should I practise — Remington or Inscript?

Practise the layout your exam allows. Many Hindi typists use Remington (Kruti Dev / GAIL) because it matches the old typewriter, while Inscript is the standard on modern computers. The official notification or test instructions say which layouts and fonts are permitted.

Do I need the Kruti Dev font to practise Remington typing here?

No. Keep your keyboard on English and type with Remington keys. The test converts each key to proper Hindi on screen, so no font installation is needed.

Can I practise with Backspace turned off?

Yes. Set Backspace to “Not allowed” before you start. Some skill tests don’t let you correct mistakes, so practising this way builds the habit of typing carefully the first time.

Is my typing uploaded or saved anywhere?

No. The test runs entirely in your browser. Only your settings (language, keyboard, time and Backspace choice) are remembered on this device so you don’t have to pick them again.
