How to use it

  1. Pick your Hindi keyboard: Remington (Kruti Dev / GAIL), Inscript (Mangal), or Device to use your phone’s Hindi keyboard.
  2. Choose the time and a passage — easy, medium, hard or your own Unicode text.
  3. Keep your computer keyboard on English, click the typing box and start. The screen shows proper Hindi as you type.
  4. Get your net speed, accuracy, key depressions per hour and every mistake when the time is up.

Typing Remington (Kruti Dev) without the font

In Remington typing, each English key stands for a Hindi letter: k is ा, j is र, H is भ्, and Hk together make भ. This test reads the keys you press and converts them to Unicode Hindi on the fly, so you see भारत when you type Hkkjr — in any browser, without installing Kruti Dev.

  • Type f (ि) before the letter: हिन्दी = fgUnh.
  • Type Z (reph) after the letter and its matra: कीर्ति = dhfrZ.
  • No Alt codes needed: क्र = dz, द्र = nz, ट्र = Vz, त्त = Rr. Alt codes such as Alt+0216 also work on Windows.

Inscript types letters in the order they are spoken, with the halant key (d) joining letters into conjuncts. Remington follows the old typewriter, which is why ि comes first. Both layouts are shown as a key chart below the typing box.

Tips for Hindi typing tests

  • Learn the half letters and conjunct keys early — क्ष ({k), त्र (=), ज्ञ (K), श्र (J) in Remington.
  • Hindi punctuation matters: the danda (।) is A in Remington and Shift+. in Inscript.
  • Practise passages from your coaching material by converting them with the Kruti Dev to Unicode converter, or prepare Kruti Dev text with the Unicode to Kruti Dev converter.

Frequently asked questions

Is Remington GAIL the same as Kruti Dev typing?

They use the same typewriter key positions, so a Kruti Dev typist can type Remington GAIL straight away. The difference is the output: Kruti Dev is a legacy font, while Remington GAIL produces Unicode text in fonts like Mangal. A few rarely used keys differ.

How do I type ि (short i) in Remington?

Press f before the consonant. For a conjunct, press it before the whole cluster — हिन्दी is f g U n h. The test shows the matra in the right place automatically.

Can I practise Hindi typing on my phone?

Remington and Inscript need a physical keyboard. On a phone, choose “Device” and switch your phone keyboard to Hindi; the test checks whatever Hindi text it types.

What Hindi typing speed is required?

Recent SSC CHSL notifications asked for 30 words per minute in Hindi (9,000 key depressions per hour) for the LDC / JSA typing test. Other exams set their own speeds and rules, so check the official notification.

Is my typing uploaded or saved anywhere?

No. The test runs entirely in your browser. Only your settings (language, keyboard, time and Backspace choice) are remembered on this device so you don’t have to pick them again.
