Unicode vs Kruti Dev: what’s the difference?

Unicode is the modern standard. Each Hindi letter has its own code, so text typed in Mangal, on Google Docs or on a phone shows correctly everywhere — in WhatsApp, on websites and in search. Kruti Dev 010 is an older font that draws Hindi shapes over ordinary English keys. The file actually stores letters like “Hkkjr”, and only the font makes them look like “भारत”. Without the font you see jumbled English.

Kruti Dev is still common in government offices, courts, DTP and printing shops and in Remington-layout typing practice, so text often has to move between the two systems.

Tricky cases this converter handles

  • Short i matra (ि): in Kruti Dev it is typed before the consonant, and before the whole cluster in words like हिन्दी, शक्ति and स्थिति.
  • Reph (र्): typed as Z after the letter and its matra — कीर्ति becomes dhfrZ, and र्ं combinations such as वर्षों use the combined ± glyph.
  • Conjuncts: क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ, श्र, द्ध, द्य, द्व, क्र, प्र, द्र, ट्र, त्त, ह्म and others map to their own Kruti Dev glyphs.
  • Nukta letters (ज़, फ़, ड़, ढ़), chandrabindu (ँ), visarga (ः), the danda (।) and Devanagari digits (१२३) are converted too. Ordinary digits 0–9 stay as they are.

Tips for clean results

  • After pasting into Word, select all the text and choose the Kruti Dev 010 font — not a different Kruti Dev number.
  • Turn off AutoCorrect or “capitalise first letter” in your editor; changing H to h changes the Hindi letter.
  • English words, ॐ and symbols such as %, @, # or [ ] have no Kruti Dev 010 shapes. The converter lists any it finds — after pasting, set those parts in a Unicode font such as Mangal or Arial.
  • Practising for a typing test? Paste your passage into the word counter to check its length, and work out your accuracy with the percentage calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the Kruti Dev result look like English letters?

Kruti Dev is a legacy font that stores Hindi as English keyboard characters. The text only looks like Hindi when the Kruti Dev 010 font is applied to it. Paste the result into MS Word or another editor and select the Kruti Dev 010 font.

Do I need to install Kruti Dev font to use this converter?

No. The conversion works without the font. You only need Kruti Dev 010 installed on the computer where you want to view or print the converted text. We don’t provide the font file itself.

How do I convert Kruti Dev text back to Unicode?

Tap “To Unicode” above the text box, paste your Kruti Dev text (copy it from Word as normal text) and copy the Unicode result. You can also use the swap button to send the last result back the other way.

Which font do Hindi typing tests use — Kruti Dev or Mangal?

It depends on the recruiting body and changes over time. Some Hindi typing tests have used Kruti Dev 010 with the Remington layout, while many now use Unicode fonts such as Mangal with Remington GAIL or Inscript keyboards. Always check the official notification or the test instructions for your exam before you practise.

Some words look slightly wrong after converting. Why?

Most often the wrong font is selected, AutoCorrect changed a letter, or the text was typed in a different legacy font such as Chanakya or Kruti Dev 016, which use other key mappings. Rare ligatures can also be typed in more than one way in Kruti Dev, so proof-read important documents.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser, so your letters, notices and documents never leave your phone or computer. Once the page has loaded it keeps working even without internet.
