How to use it

  1. Choose the time — 1, 2, 5, 10 or 15 minutes — and an easy, medium or hard passage, or paste your own.
  2. Click the typing box and start. The timer starts with your first key press.
  3. Type exactly as shown, including capitals and punctuation. Press Esc to restart at any time.
  4. See your net WPM, accuracy, mistakes and key depressions per hour when the time is up.

What the passages train

Easy passages use short, common words. Medium passages add longer sentences and more punctuation. Hard passages include capitals, numbers, quotation marks and semicolons — the details that cost marks in skill tests. All passages are written for ToolDabba and repeat if you finish before the time is up.

How mistakes are counted

  • Full mistakes: a wrong word, a missed word or an extra word.
  • Half mistakes: the right word with a wrong capital letter or punctuation mark, like “india” for “India”.
  • One skipped word is counted once — the rest of your typing is lined up with the passage again.

Typing test or data entry test?

SSC uses two kinds of skill test. In the typing test for LDC / JSA posts, speed is judged in words per minute on a passage. In the Data Entry Speed Test for DEO and Tax Assistant posts, speed is measured in key depressions per hour, so every character — letters, digits, spaces and punctuation — counts. The key depressions per hour in your result help with both: 8,000 KDPH works out to about 27 words per minute.

Getting faster

  • Learn touch typing on the home row and stop looking at the keys.
  • Type in a steady rhythm; bursts of speed followed by corrections are slower overall.
  • Use the 10 or 15 minute tests to build the stamina a real skill test needs.
  • Count words in any practice passage with the word counter.

Frequently asked questions

How is typing speed calculated?

Speed is counted in key depressions (every key that ends up in your text, including spaces). Five key depressions make one word, so gross WPM = key depressions ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. Net WPM then subtracts your mistakes per minute, which is why accuracy matters as much as speed.

What is a good English typing speed?

For government skill tests, recent SSC CHSL notifications asked for 35 words per minute in English (10,500 key depressions per hour) for the LDC / JSA typing test. For everyday office work, 40 WPM or more with high accuracy is comfortable.

Do capital letters and punctuation matter?

Yes. A wrong capital or punctuation mark is counted as a half mistake here, as many exams do. Type the passage exactly as shown.

Can I practise with Backspace turned off?

Yes. Set Backspace to “Not allowed” before you start. Some skill tests don’t let you correct mistakes, so practising this way builds the habit of typing carefully the first time.

Is my typing uploaded or saved anywhere?

No. The test runs entirely in your browser. Only your settings (language, keyboard, time and Backspace choice) are remembered on this device so you don’t have to pick them again.
