Add Page Numbers to PDF

Number a project report, a set of application documents or scanned notes — top or bottom, in the style you want — without the file leaving your phone.

  • 100% private
  • Free · no signup
  • Works on any phone

How to use it

  1. Tap “Select PDF” and choose your file. A preview of the first page appears.
  2. Tap the spot on the little page where the number should go (bottom centre is the usual choice) and pick a style such as “1” or “Page 1 of N”.
  3. To leave the cover page without a number, choose “Skip first”. Change the start number, text size or distance from the edge if you need to.
  4. Check the preview — the arrows show other pages — then tap “Add page numbers” and “Download PDF”.

When page numbers help

  • Project reports, dissertations and assignments that a college wants submitted with numbered pages and a contents page that points to them.
  • Application sets and annexures — an RTI reply, a scholarship file or a set of certificates — where an officer needs to say “see page 7” and spot a missing page at a glance.
  • Scanned notes and printouts, so loose sheets can be put back in order.

Styles you can choose

Six positions are available: top or bottom, each on the left, in the centre or on the right.

Skipping the cover, or numbering only some pages

  • Skip first leaves the cover page blank and starts the numbers on page 2. The second page shows “1” unless you change the start number — set it to 2 if the cover should still count.
  • Choose numbers only the pages you type, for example 3-20 to leave out a cover and a contents page, or 1-10, 15-30.
  • Start numbering at any number — handy when this file continues another one, e.g. start at 41.

In “Page 1 of N” styles, N is the last number printed, so the numbering always adds up.

Sideways, landscape and mixed-size pages

Numbers are placed on each page as you see it. A landscape page, or a page that was scanned sideways and turned the right way up with Rotate PDF, still gets an upright number at the bottom of what you see — not along its side. Pages of different sizes each get the number the same distance from their own edge.

Nothing else on the page changes

The numbers are added as real text on top of the existing pages. Nothing is re-compressed, so scans keep their quality, text stays selectable and searchable, and links, bookmarks and form fields are kept. The file grows by only a few kilobytes.

  • Standard PDF fonts can't show Hindi letters, so पृष्ठ and other non-English wording is added as a sharp, high-resolution picture of the words. It prints crisply, but you can't select it as text.
  • Password-protected PDFs, or ones locked against editing, are saved with each page as an image and the numbers on top. The tool tells you before you start.

Private by design

The PDF is numbered inside your browser and never uploaded, so your documents stay on your device.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add page numbers to a PDF on my phone?

Open this page in Chrome or Safari, tap “Select PDF”, choose where the number goes and its style, then tap “Add page numbers” and download. There's no app to install.

How do I start page numbers from page 2 and leave the cover blank?

Under “Pages to number”, choose “Skip first”. The second page then shows 1. If you'd rather it showed 2 (counting the cover), set “Start numbering at” to 2.

Can I write “Page 1 of 10”?

Yes. Choose the “Page 1 of N” style. N is filled in automatically as the last page number, so a 10-page file reads Page 1 of 10 to Page 10 of 10.

Can I add page numbers in Hindi?

Yes. Choose “पृष्ठ 1”, or choose Custom and type any wording, such as “पृष्ठ {n} / {total}”. Hindi wording is added as a high-resolution picture of the text, because standard PDF fonts can't show Devanagari; English numbers are added as real text.

Will adding page numbers reduce quality or increase the file size?

No. Pages aren't re-compressed — the numbers are added on top — so quality is identical and the file grows by only a few kilobytes. Password-protected PDFs are the exception: their pages are saved as images.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. Everything happens in your browser, so the file never leaves your phone or computer and nothing is stored on our servers.
